Gayathri works with our global TechOps team. Her team spans across the globe - from Melbourne in the east to San Francisco in the west. She and her partner (incidentally a Thoughtworker as well), have a six year old son. As a nuclear family, they don't have much help to take care of their kid once he finishes school. So for Gayathri, going to office is professionally and personally quite impractical.

Thankfully, Gayathri can work from home. Once she or her partner have dropped their son at school, they work out of separate rooms in the house. Mid-afternoon, once their child is back he usually self manages till evening, but every now and then he demands attention from his parents. A hug, a few minutes of play, a little story - Gayathri's team empathises with these little breaks and even says hello to the little guy on calls every now and then. When she does need to go to the office to meet some people in person, her partner holds fort at home. And vice-versa.

Gayathri recommends building your remote team by focusing on trust, and strong relationships. She also suggests you have opportunities for casual conversations and that even while you’re remote, you make opportunities for face to face interaction so the team’s camaraderie stays strong.

Your team probably has one or more Gayathris too. To know how you can create a productive remote work environment for them and others, check out our page on remote work.
